Atal Tunnel

- Location: Connects Manali (South Portal, 3,060m) to Sissu/Lahaul Valley (North Portal, 3,071m).
- Strategic Importance: Provides all-weather connectivity, allowing the Indian armed forces year-round access to border areas in Ladakh.
- Construction: Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) over 10 years, overcoming major challenges like winter accessibility and heavy water ingress.
- Safety & Design: A horse-shoe-shaped, two-lane tunnel with an 8-meter roadway, featuring a dedicated emergency egress tunnel, fire safety systems, and automated lighting.
- Tourism: An “engineering marvel” and popular tourist attraction in itself, offering a swift route between lush green and high-altitude, arid terrains.
- The tunnel, named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has transformed accessibility to the remote, and previously cut-off, Lahaul-Spiti region.
